Although OjeOje is a smaller brand, we have wanted to develop an ESG report since the company was founded in 2023. ESG reporting is now a requirement for many larger companies, and we want to take a structured approach to our responsibilities and impact from an early stage.

OjeOje takes responsibility

Carrying out an ESG assessment involves significant costs. We therefore applied for funding through Erhvervshusene, the Danish Business Hubs. We were fortunate to receive financial support, which made it possible to initiate the work in collaboration with a consultancy with extensive experience in ESG reporting. ESG stands for Environmental, Social and Governance – covering environmental impact, social responsibility and governance.

At OjeOje, we want to be transparent about what we do and how we develop as a company. That is why we are sharing our ESG report openly and in plain language – as it looks today. It is not 100% perfect, it is not finished, but it is honest and evolving. We design and produce glasses, and that has an impact on the environment. When we put products into the world, we also become part of a larger system involving resource consumption, production, transportation and patterns of consumption. That is part of reality, and it is a reality we want to take responsibility for. Future generations will experience less diversity in plants and animals – less to see, live from and interact with. This applies to the air, water and land. This development is caused by many factors, including the way we as a society design, produce, use and dispose of products. Glasses are part of this picture too.

What does OjeOje need to address?

When we produce glasses, we affect our surroundings. Our activities result in greenhouse gas emissions measured in CO₂ equivalents, contributing to the challenges future generations will face. Our overall impact puts pressure on both nature and the systems of which we are part. At the same time, the consequences are already visible. We are experiencing more extreme and more frequent weather events, affecting both people and ecosystems and making it clear that we need to actively address our footprint. We therefore cannot design, produce, sell or buy glasses without also taking responsibility for the impact this creates. That is why we have chosen to work with a consultancy with extensive experience in ESG reporting. The purpose has been to understand where we are today, what risks and opportunities exist, and what it will take to improve our efforts in concrete terms.

Where is OjeOje today?

When we began working on the ESG report, we expected the focus to be primarily on doing more good. Through the process, we have learned that it is equally important – and often the first step – to do less harm. Some things can be improved relatively easily through planning, adjustments and continuous improvements. Much of the work, however, is complex and involves dilemmas where there is no single right solution. This means that we still have a long way to go, and that progress requires time, knowledge and collaboration. This report is therefore not a conclusion, but a starting point for OjeOje.

What are OjeOje’s ambitions?

Our ambitions are rooted in a desire to take responsibility while developing our business in a more sustainable direction. OjeOje aims to:
1. Live from our expertise – designing quality glasses with a long lifespan.
2. Develop circular solutions for glasses that reduce or eliminate negative impact.
3. Reduce the impact of our production and logistics.
4. Challenge and reduce the overconsumption of glasses.
5. Strengthen our overall positive impact.
6. Inspire – and be inspired – to live a life of high quality with a lower negative impact.

What does OjeOje’s footprint look like?

In 2024, we estimated our total CO₂e emissions for the first time. This measurement serves as our baseline and provides a starting point for future improvements. The calculation is based on expenditure, as our suppliers do not yet provide product-specific emissions data. ESG work is still developing across many parts of the value chain, and our data foundation will therefore continue to improve over time. Our total estimated CO₂e emissions in 2024 were approximately 63 tonnes CO₂e. The majority of our emissions are in Scope 3. The calculation is based on the data available for 2024 and should therefore be considered an estimate. Breakdown of our CO₂e emissions by main category:

Energy and processes (location-based): 0.07%
Purchasing: 72.5%
Transport (location-based): 27.4%

What is Scope 3?

Scope 3 covers indirect emissions that do not arise from our own operations but are a consequence of our activities and value chain. This includes, among other things, the production of materials, transportation, packaging, supplier activities, as well as the use and disposal of our glasses. In other words, the vast majority of our climate footprint lies outside our own organisation – but it is still part of our responsibility.

What are OjeOje’s goals?

The number itself is abstract, but the process has given us a number of important insights. We now know that our emissions need to be reduced if we want to move in a more responsible direction. At the same time, we know that our total emissions will increase if our business grows. This is a fundamental paradox that we need to actively address. Our goal is therefore not perfection, but continuous improvement. If we can reduce our impact while inspiring others to do the same, we are moving in the right direction.

OjeOje’s current situation

OjeOje is not sustainable – yet. We are specialists in glasses and have for many years focused on design, quality and functionality. Through our work on the ESG report, we have gained a much clearer understanding that even good intentions and good products can still have a negative impact. That is why we are working purposefully to reduce our footprint and improve our practices. We see this as an ongoing process in which transparency, dialogue and learning are key elements.

How will OjeOje continue its work?

OjeOje is a small Danish company with a global supply chain and an international market. This obliges us to think long-term and responsibly. We want to be a stable business partner – also in a world characterised by change and uncertainty. That is why we are taking a more considered approach to our use of resources. We focus on reducing our dependence on scarce resources and fossil energy, and where possible, we prioritise materials and processes with a lower environmental impact. At the same time, we actively seek new knowledge and collaborate with partners who can contribute expertise and experience.

What are we focusing on?

Here we have gathered the most important aspects of what we are focusing on – from materials and design to quality, responsibility and our ambition to make a difference:

We design and produce all our frames using 50% recycled PC plastic from post-consumer waste (rPC) and 50% virgin PC material. In this way, we give materials a new life that might otherwise end up as waste. At the same time, we ensure the strength and durability required of an eyeglass frame. The recycled material has been tested by SGS for relevant SVHC substances in accordance with EU REACH regulations.

We work from a slow-fashion mindset, focusing on quality, longevity and more conscious consumption rather than fast trends.

We upcycle existing frames and use surplus textiles from Kvadrat to create hand-sewn fabric cases, made in Denmark by volunteers from Soroptimist International.

We avoid overproduction by producing according to expected demand and therefore do not have clearance sales or sales periods.

We repair and reuse our glasses whenever possible and accept used OjeOje glasses so they can be given a new life through donation.

We select suppliers based on responsibility and shared values.

We continuously work to reduce our transportation footprint where possible.

We use recycled paper and FSC-certified paper where possible and prioritise production close to our markets.

We support Plastic Change and their work to reduce plastic pollution.

We collaborate with Væksthuset and contribute to supporting people who need assistance entering or returning to the labour market.

We donate glasses to, among others, Burundi, Kibera, Bangladesh and Ukraine. #everyonehastherighttosee

And just as importantly: We provide good service and take pride in having satisfied customers. We have a 5-star rating on Trustpilot.

OjeOje needs to be concrete

We want to be open about the choices we make rather than using broad terms such as 'sustainable' to describe our products. That is why we talk about our materials, production, repairs, packaging and social engagement – and continuously work to strengthen the documentation and traceability behind our information.

About our glasses

Our glasses are designed in Denmark and produced in Taiwan by a carefully selected manufacturer. The recycled PC plastic from post-consumer waste (rPC) comes from a material supplier. The recycled material has been tested by SGS for relevant SVHC substances in accordance with EU REACH regulations.

The frames consist of 50% recycled PC plastic and 50% virgin PC material. In this way, we give materials a new life that might otherwise end up as waste. This blend ensures the strength and durability required of an eyeglass frame. Glasses are exposed to many stresses in everyday use, and a frame made from 100% recycled plastic does not provide the strength and durability we are looking for. For us, it is about designing quality glasses with a long lifespan. When glasses last longer, this helps reduce the need to buy new glasses. We therefore see longevity as an important part of our approach to reducing our environmental impact.

Documentation and traceability of recycled PC plastic

We want to be honest and transparent about what OjeOje can document today. Our frames contain a minimum of 50% PC plastic from post-consumer waste (rPC). This is documented through a signed declaration from our carefully selected manufacturer in Taiwan. The recycled PC plastic comes from a material supplier. At the same time, we can trace our OjeOje glasses from the manufacturer in Taiwan through the documentation accompanying each shipment. This documentation includes information such as supplier, manufacturer, customer, order number, invoice number, shipping date and product style number. We continuously work to strengthen documentation and traceability throughout the different stages of our supply chain – from materials and production to the transportation of our glasses to Denmark.

What does quality mean at OjeOje?

A central part of our approach is that the most responsible pair of glasses is one that is used and lasts for a long time. That is why we design glasses with a focus on fit, aesthetics and durability. We work on solutions that balance design, quality and functionality with a reduced use of new fossil-based materials.

What can you do?

Our OjeOje glasses require resources to produce. That is why it makes great sense to extend their lifespan wherever possible:

Take good care of your OjeOje glasses
Good maintenance helps extend the lifespan of your OjeOje glasses. Always store them in your OjeOje case when you are not using them, and clean them with a microfibre cleaning cloth. Avoid placing the glasses with the lenses facing downwards, and preferably take them off using both hands to prevent the frame from becoming misaligned.

Have your OjeOje glasses repaired
We offer repairs for your OjeOje glasses whenever possible. You can visit our showroom in Lyngby, Denmark, where we assess the glasses and the available repair options. Although a repair can sometimes be more expensive than buying a new pair, it makes sense because:
1. It reduces overall resource consumption.
2. It gives us valuable insight into the durability of our products.
3. It helps challenge a throwaway culture.
4. It points towards a future where repair and maintenance become more widespread.

Return your OjeOje glasses
We live in a time when consumption often exceeds our needs and products are replaced even when they still work. By returning your OjeOje glasses when you are finished with them, they can be given a new life through donation. This helps reduce resource waste and supports a more circular approach. We donate reading glasses to, among others, Burundi, Kibera, Bangladesh and Ukraine, where they make a real difference and bring great value and benefit to the people who receive them.

How does OjeOje move forward – together?

This report is a snapshot of where OjeOje stands today and a starting point for the work ahead. We will continue to learn, listen, stay curious and ask questions and set requirements – both of ourselves and of the people and partners we work with. We will follow developments in new materials and opportunities for re- and upcycling and explore how new solutions can become part of OjeOje. For us, it is not about having all the answers. It is about continuing to ask questions, staying curious and looking for opportunities – with our 'green' glasses on.
